Celebrated Indonesian cleric Syekh Ali Jaber passes away

Indonesia is mourning celebrated cleric Syekh Ali Jaber, who passed away this morning after he was said to have beaten COVID-19. He was 44.
Fellow preacher Yusuf Mansur was among those who shared the news this morning, saying that the naturalized Saudi-born Ali Jaber passed away at 8:30am today at Yarsi Hospital in Central Jakarta.
Yusuf said Ali Jaber had spent 17 days at the hospital after he tested positive for COVID-19. The latter reportedly exhibited fever and coughing symptoms and required a ventilator throughout his treatment.

“[Ali Jaber] did get COVID-19, but it was gone. He died after having tested negative for COVID-19,” Yusuf said on Instagram.
However, Yusuf said Ali Jaber’s condition deteriorated overnight. Whether or not he died from COVID-19 has not been officially established.

Ali Jaber was well regarded as a cleric who preached messages of tolerance. He was praised by the government for his constant promotion of responsible health precautions amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

In September, Ali Jaber was stabbed in the arm during a sermon in Lampung, but went straight back to preaching after his wound was treated.
